Urban solutions and innovations
With a population over 13 million, Tokyo has a main problem of population density because of this Tokyo has become a very crowed city. The solution to fix this problem perhaps could be is to decentralize people from the city by providing work opportunities elsewhere. One thing that drives people to the larger cities, are the job opportunities. By creating another large city in Japan similar to Tokyo the city would become less crowed. Moving large companies to these new areas could help attract people to these new cities.
Due to small and compact apartments in Tokyo a solution to prevent the congestion, would be to create building regulations and making the buildings higher so that there is more space for the population to grow. Such apartments as the 'geki-sema' have become extremely expensive costing up to $600 a month. These coffin like apartments of course are no way to live. To improve these apartments would be to create smart ways to reinvent tiny spaces that are practical. By using less expensive building materials the hefty prices could be decreased.
Public transport as become an easy way to travel but in Tokyo with about 8.6 million people who catch the train daily the trains can be become overly packed. A way to solve this problem would to make larger train stations and larger trains to accommodate more people. Building apartments on top of these train stations would mean more accommodation for our citizens. By doing this this we would also be offering more job opportunities in the city.
Tokyo has demonstrated of conserving energy after the earthquake in 2011, but the city knows they need more to be done for long term energy security. Solutions to help conserve the energy would be to use a carefully balanced energy mix that embraces a range of sources, innovative technologies and new policies to effect change. Another critical solution is a re-imagination of Tokyo to make them more efficient and friendlier to the environment.
In the past Japan has suffered from severe tsunamis and earthquakes which have caused damaging to buildings etc. A way to solve this problem would to be to use materials on buildings to prevent any buildings being damaged by the severe weather. We could also make remove any offices or residents on the first floors so that they do not get damaged.
Tokyo can solve the issue of natural disasters by designing their buildings to be strong in the case of a natural disaster like earth quakes. So when they build a building instead of using timber or light weight materials for buildings they use big slabs of concrete and get engineers to construct buildings that are heavy duty and withstand natural disasters.
Overall we could improve the city by making it more environmently sustainable to benefit the citizens. Tokyo has become one of most polluted cities in the world, but we are still thinking of new ways to make our city environmentally sustainable. Such things as using more renewable energy, such as solar power to increase the cities independence of fossil fuels, progress in the un active use of energy, using wind, light and heat naturally in homes and other places. This idea will revolve around dynamics of buildings and the relationship with surrounding nature. These are just some of the ideas but there are so many other possibilities. By making these changes by 2050 Tokyo should be a livable city.
